THATCHER —  Eastern Arizona College (EAC) has appointed Joel Robinson as the new director of its Small Business Development Center (SBDC), a critical resource for entrepreneurs across southeastern Arizona. Robinson, an EAC alumnus, brings a strong business ownership and consulting background to the role.

Robinson’s career includes 21 years in Houston, Texas, as the owner and operator of multiple swimming pool and construction businesses that served both commercial and residential clients. During this time, he honed his skills in financial management, customer relations, and operational efficiency. He also served as vice president of construction for Stonewall Associates, managing complex, multi-site projects across the western United States. As president of the Dunn Southwest Business Park Association, Robinson led initiatives that provided vital support to small businesses, including advocacy programs and professional development symposiums.

“Joel’s leadership skills and real-world experience as a business owner will be invaluable as we work to strengthen our small business community,” said Keith Alexander, EAC’s chief government relations officer. “He understands the challenges entrepreneurs face and brings practical, hands-on knowledge to help them succeed. His dedication to fostering growth and innovation will elevate the SBDC’s impact and further EAC’s mission of driving economic development in the region.”

A graduate of Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business with a bachelor of science degree in economics, Robinson also holds an associate degree from Eastern Arizona College. His educational foundation, combined with hands-on entrepreneurial experience, positions him to guide local businesses in overcoming challenges and achieving sustainable growth.

“Eastern Arizona College holds a special place in my heart, and I’m honored to return to the Gila Valley to support its entrepreneurial community,” Robinson said. “Since 1988, the EAC SBDC has been a cornerstone for small business development in the region. I look forward to building on its legacy by helping local businesses thrive in today’s economy.”

In addition to his professional achievements, Robinson is fluent in Spanish, further broadening the center’s ability to serve Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs.

Robinson has already assumed his new role, and his wife, Melynda, and their five children will join him in the Gila Valley after the Spring 2025 semester.
