Women in Security: Marie Newton, Operations Manager, GardaWorld

MONTREAL — Marie Newton is another in a long line of security industry veterans who never expected to make a career out of it, but is glad she did.

Here’s more from Newton, in her own words, as our celebration of International Women’s History Month stretches into April.

Security Sales & Integration: How did you get into the security industry?

Marie Newton: My journey in the security industry began unexpectedly, with a simple invitation from friends to work a concert at Fenway Park. What started as a one-time gig soon evolved into a regular weekend commitment, spanning various venues across Boston. Little did I know that initial opportunity would shape the trajectory of my career in security.

SSI: Have you encountered any difficulties or obstacles in your security industry career?

Newton: In my 15-year industry journey, I’ve encountered a few obstacles, although infrequently. At times, being a woman has led to encounters where skepticism about my abilities arises. Fortunately, these instances are rare and typically resolved with experience and time.

The support of the leadership surrounding me always makes a difference.

SSI: Whom would you point to as the most influential and helpful mentors in your career? What did they do to help you?

Newton: The most influential person in my career has been Robert Clark. Rob has been my direct manager, my client, and my mentor.  He provides opportunities for growth and then highlights positive achievements. Rob takes the time to provide an all-encompassing point of view for business decisions and crisis management helping you learn and grow even if you weren’t directly involved in every part of the process.

He speaks well of you when you are not in the room and when people are struggling, he tries to find their strengths and places for them to excel. Rob leads by example and when given the chance works directly alongside the team. In the last five years that we have worked together, my growth happened exponentially quicker than it did it the five years before.

SSI: What is your proudest career accomplishment?

Newton: My proudest career moments happen almost weekly. Yes, I have had some personal career highs, such as graduating from GardaWorld’s mentorship program, but as an operations manager, my focus is on my team. Every time I am able to help a guard with a problem, support them into a promotion or guide them through a crisis, I feel like I have exceeded my goals for the day.

SSI: What do you love most about working in the security industry?

Newton: Working in the security industry is truly fulfilling. The core of my passion lies in ensuring people feel safe and protected. From recommending optimal camera placements to deploying dedicated guards, my drive stems from safeguarding our clients’ valuables.

Every day, I find purpose in upholding security standards and delivering peace of mind.

SSI: How can the security industry become even better?

Newton: I feel like security industry could become better by focusing on hiring and retaining quality talent. After that, we need strong reporting chains of command, comprehensive training, and providing strong mentorship opportunities.
